Viaje a “La Guaira” suite
Gerard created a four-part suite called "Viaje a Guaira" to depict his grandfather's journey into exile. In 1950, his grandfather Idilio refused to join the Spanish fascist army, which was mandatory at the time, and fled the country by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean towards Venezuela. Despite encountering numerous dangers during his 30-day journey, Idilio survived and later chronicled his experiences in an autobiography he wrote during his elder years. Several years later, Gerard stumbled upon the book and found inspiration in its contents. This led him to compose music to accompany his grandfather's story and pay homage to his legacy in a meaningful way.
